Historic Hotel in Amsterdam - Hotel De L’Europe
Travelers in search of a historic hotel in Amsterdam cannot go wrong with Hotel De L’Europe.
Before De L’Europe was the historic hotel that it is today, a part of the building was a fortress that protected the beautiful city of Amsterdam.
Hotel De L’Europe - Historic Amsterdam Hotel
Hotel De L’Europe was built upon the foundations that once belonged to the original city of Amsterdam.
In the 1400s, the place where the hotel stands today used to be one of the entrances to the city.
The first defensive walls in this part of the city were built in 1482. One of the wall towers was called Rondeel and it was placed precisely where De L’Europe is today. In 1638, an inn was built on the site of the old Rondeel tower. By 1772, the inn needed some major renovations. The renovations took place and a new façade facing the Amstel river was added.
Between the years of 1838-1845, the Rondeel inn was auctioned off and bought by Mr. H. J. Wolters. Not only did he renovate the inn yet again, but he also focused on a particular kind of clientele. His niche became traveling gentlemen and families.
In 1882 H. J. Wolters decided to sell the inn. He sold the premises to R. Kamps and A.J.D. van den Berg. It is believed that the new owners expected a great influx of clientele coming for the World Fair in Amsterdam in 1883. So they renovated the Amstel River-facing façade and added an additional floor.
New construction was done and the hotel officially re-opened as Hodel De L’Europe on September 23rd, 1896. The architect, Mr. W. Hamer, succeeded in incorporating certain elements of the old style of the side façades into the new building, giving the exterior a romantic feel.
This new hotel had 50 guest rooms, a lovely dining room, a large event space, a smaller event space for intimate dinners, and a large café with an outdoor terrace overlooking the river. Additionally, it was founded on approximately 620 piles of natural stone and red brick in Renaissance style.
It had a special banquet hall and several smaller venues on the top floor. However, what was most astonishing was the reception hall, The Rondeel Room, which had a beautiful view of the river.
Today, after over 125 years of service, Hotel De L’Europe is the oldest luxury hotel in the city!
(There are many other historic hotels, many other grand hotels, and luxury hotels in Amsterdam. There’s the beautiful Waldorf Astoria, Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam, or Hotel TwentySeven by Dam Square. All of those hotels are impressive on their own. I am simply choosing to highlight De L’Europe because of its strong connection to the history of the city.)
Although it is full of ancient history, the hotel was recently fully renovated. Today, anyone who walks the halls of De L’Europe will be delighted with beautiful works of art, and be surrounded by a modern atmosphere.

Historic Amsterdam Hotel, De l’Europe Signature Suites
Royal Penthouse Suite
This is the largest suite in the De L’Europe collection, covering an area of 220 square meters. I think this suite offers a very unique possibility, and here’s why. The Royal Penthouse starts with one spacious bedroom with a king-size bed, but it can be extended to five bedrooms! A great choice for those traveling as a family or with a large group of friends.
Outfitted with floor-to-ceiling windows, a generous living lounge area, a lush dining space, and a wrapping private terrace, the Royal Penthouse boasts more than ample space for entertaining and living. Additionally, guests can enjoy the added privacy of a powder room, and a walk-in closet, separate from the bathroom.
As if that was not enough, the list of room amenities includes a luxury all-natural COCO-MAT king-size bed, premium down bedding with pillow options, 400 thread count satin bed linens, Loewe audio-visual system and 2 Loewe LCD televisions, Private butler service (aha, you read that right, private!), Carrara marble bathroom with heated floor, Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, thick terry towels and bathrobes, exclusive Diptyque toiletries, and twice-daily housekeeping service.
Presidential Loft Suite
This is my favorite suite from this fabulous historic hotel in Amsterdam. This one-bedroom suite is 160 square meters of gorgeous original features and impressive floor-to-ceiling bay windows. Not only do the windows brighten up the suite with natural light, but they also offer a view of the Amstel River and the famous National Opera & Ballet theatre that is unbeatable. The spacious open-plan living allows for more than enough room for entertaining and comfortable living. Additionally, guests can enjoy the added privacy of a powder room, and a walk-in closet, separate from the bathroom (like in the Royal Penthouse suite).
As if that was not enough, the list of room amenities includes a luxury all-natural COCO-MAT king-size bed, premium down bedding with pillow options, 400 thread count satin bed linens, Loewe audio-visual system and 2 Loewe LCD televisions, PRIVATE butler service (again, private!), heated bathroom floor, a Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, thick terry towels, and bathrobes, exclusive Diptyque toiletries, and twice-daily housekeeping service.
This is an EXCELLENT choice for families or those seeking an ultra-luxurious romantic getaway.
